Overview

St John’s College School in Cambridge is an independent co-educational school for children aged 4–13. Known for its strong emphasis on reading for pleasure, the school wanted a platform that could unify library services across both Prep and Senior phases, support independent exploration, and make reading more visible across the curriculum.

We spoke with Sarah Pavey, Librarian, about how Reading Cloud helped streamline operations and embed reading into daily school life.

Challenge

The school previously used separate systems for different phases, which created duplication and limited visibility. Students couldn’t easily search for books or track their reading, and staff lacked a unified view of library usage. The library team needed a solution that could simplify access, encourage independence, and support curriculum alignment.

“We needed a system that could bring everything together and make it easier for students to engage with reading independently.”

— Sarah Pavey, Librarian

Solution

Reading Cloud was implemented across both Prep and Senior phases, replacing legacy systems and creating a consistent experience for students and staff. Sarah worked with the Customer Success Team to configure the platform to reflect the school’s structure and priorities.

The single catalogue allows students to search for books across both libraries. Reading Lists support curriculum topics and personal interests, while student avatars encourage exploration and personalise the experience. Teachers have access to the system, enabling them to recommend titles and track reading habits. A custom homepage showcases new resources and reflects the school’s identity.

“The avatars are a great way to get students involved. They love seeing their progress and exploring new titles.”

— Sarah Pavey, Librarian

 Impact

Students now search, reserve, and review books on their own, building confidence and ownership. Reading Cloud has helped foster independence and curiosity, especially among younger learners.

Teachers actively use the platform to support classroom learning, recommend books, and celebrate reading milestones. The library is no longer a standalone service—it’s embedded into teaching and learning across the school.

Operationally, the move to a single system has improved efficiency and collaboration. Staff have full visibility across both phases, and the library team can manage resources more effectively.

“Reading Cloud has made our library more accessible, more engaging, and more aligned with how our students learn.”

— Sarah Pavey, Librarian

Conclusion

St John’s College School has unified its library services and empowered students to take charge of their reading journey. With Reading Cloud at the centre, the school has created a seamless, student-led experience that supports both pleasure and purpose.
